At Alcohol and Drugs Action (ADA), we understand that accessing support in Aberdeenshire can look different from city-based services — and for good reason. With such a large geographical area, we work hard to make sure everyone gets the help they need, no matter where they live.
As part of Aberdeen’s Integrated Drug and Alcohol Services,
we provide harm reduction advice, information, and support tailored to your needs. You can access our services directly—via self-referral, through your GP, or via another support agency.
Support Across Aberdeenshire
Accessing Drug and Alcohol Services (DAS) starts with your local Step In team. These are friendly, multi-disciplinary teams made up of workers from ADA, Social Work, and the NHS, all here to help you make positive changes. If you’re not comfortable being seen in your local area, we’ll do our best to arrange support in another location.

Foodbank and community larder referrals
Support attending GP or hospital appointments

We’re here to meet you where you are — literally.

How to Get Started
Getting in touch is easy. You can:
- Self-refer by contacting your local Step In directly
- Call the ADA Helpline, and we’ll pass your details to your area’s team
- Ask a professional (like your GP or hospital staff) to refer you
- A family member or friend can also get in touch on your behalf — we’ll just need your permission to proceed
Once we receive your referral, someone from the team will be in touch within two working days to arrange your first appointment.

Needle Exchange & Harm Reduction
If you’re unable to reach a Step In or live in a more remote area, we also offer a doorstep needle exchange service, run by Alex Fulton. Alex can take your order over the phone and arrange to deliver injecting equipment straight to your door or to a safe agreed location.
Sharps disposal bins are also available, and we can collect full bins for safe disposal.

“Spring Clean” Days
We also run regular “Spring Clean” days across Aberdeenshire to help safely collect and dispose of used equipment. If you use any form of injecting substances — including steroids — and live rurally, we encourage you to order enough supplies to last until your next delivery or contact. For small orders, we may be able to post supplies directly to you.
